Don’t Forget Your Kitchens // Exhibition by Sharrell Rushin
Sharrell Rushin’s multimedia art exhibition, Don’t Forget Your Kitchens, is an ode to Black American hair culture. This month-long show will feature mixed media art that presents iconic aspects of Black American hair culture in the form of Pop Art.

Born and raised in the east end of Pittsburgh, before it was the cool place to be– Rell’s youth was spent as a classically trained singer, studying voice from grades 6-12 at both at Rogers and CAPA, a Pittsburgh high school for the creative and performing arts. Long before her dreams of being an opera star, she took interest in fashion design, honing her sewing skills by creating fashions for her extensive collection of Barbie dolls. However, she did not take interest in drawing and painting until her senior year of high school while preparing her portfolio for art and design colleges.

STATEMENT
My work is a synthesis of several material practices centered around a singular alternate universe of anthropomorphic baseball-obsessed dog-people.The work I’ve made here in Pittsburgh has been heavily influenced by the intense energy of the city’s sports fandom. My artwork primarily hangs on the visual and cultural framework of baseball, and feeds off the fervent homo-social energy (and wealth of androphilic sexual euphemisms) that come with it. My focus here has been mainly off the field and in the nosebleeds, shifting my queer lens from the experience of the dog-players to the experience of the dog-fans. Strong, intense emotion comes hand in hand with fandom, and these pups are unashamed to put their candid emotions on display. From brand loyalty and pride in your team colors, to crushing on their favorite player, to wanting vengeance for the team when they fall. I’ve made a series of paintings, embroideries, and soft sculptures that bring this universe into our 3 dimensions, and explores how these pups might go about displaying their pride.

Antechamber is a presentation of new 2D and 3D works by Leah Patgorski that ponder multiple meanings of the show’s title. The word evokes ancillary but significant spaces, such as a room for private conversations next to a parlor, or a chamber of artifacts preceding an ancient tomb. In either scenario, the artist’s textile sculptures and other objects take conscious roles in a threshold moment.

Dystopias seem to dominate representations of future in videogames. Whether post-apocalyptic or cyberpunk, they provide a perfect backdrop for individualistic fantasies of destruction and survival. As the real world catches up with the most pessimistic predictions, we want to highlight games that prefigure better futures. The Ultimate GAGI showcase closes a decade @ Unblurred with debut of Pride Rocks!

After ten tremendous years, the Geek Art/ Green Innovator's festival ends on a high note as is collaborating with the "Pride Rocks" Festival happening city wide in Pittsburgh.

"Through the years, GA/GI, which sprung out of World Environment Day in 2010,  gave Penn Avenue one of its first visible branding themes, and Pittsburgh its first tech and green festival," said, Christine Bethea, Lead Artist and  GAGI founder. We have so many to thank for years of great events, projects and programs."

GA/GI has spawned some remarkable projects over the years that have come from universities, and both the non-profit and private sector. The Bloomfield Garfield Corporation's newspaper--the Bulletin--highlighted some of these events in their May 2016 issue (see left  top blog column).

GA/GI is destined to become a lecture series at a venue near you! Stay posted!
